I never thought I’d have to undergo such a major surgery… If only my wife hadn’t signed up for it five years ago…

Elder Kim Moo-hwan of OH

While I was hearing a lot about health insurance at church, my wife, Deaconess Kim, saw an ad in the Christian Journal and joined the Christian Medical Mutual Aid Society five years ago.

They said the plan would cover medical expenses after a $1,000 deductible, so I thought the coverage was good compared to the premium, but I couldn’t quite believe it.
Since last April, I’ve been experiencing frequent symptoms such as chest tightness, difficulty breathing, and a pulling sensation at the back of my head. When I went to see a doctor, I was instructed to go to a major hospital for a thorough examination. After undergoing a catheterization at the hospital, I was diagnosed with three arteries that were more than 85% blocked and was told I would need bypass surgery.

For 66 years, by God’s grace, I had lived a healthy life without ever having surgery at a hospital, so I was at a loss when I was told I would need open-heart triple bypass surgery. First, I informed my pastor, then I told my entire family, and finally, I notified the Christian Medical Mutual Aid Society.
The surgery lasted four and a half hours. I spent three days in the intensive care unit at the hospital, was then transferred to a general ward for three days of treatment, and was discharged to recover at home for three months.

After a few weeks, bills for hospital fees, doctor’s fees, and various tests began to pile up. Surprisingly, the total cost was nearly $90,000. Deacon Kim and Deaconess Kim kept in touch with the Christian Medical Mutual Aid Society and began to worry about the hospital bills.
My wife and I prayed that the Christian Medical Mutual Aid Society would handle everything well, and we began to pray for others undergoing such major surgeries.
One day, my wife told me not to worry, saying that the Christian Medical Mutual Aid Society would take care of everything, so we should be grateful. She said we needed to send the $1,000 deductible. It truly feels like a dream. I believe the Christian Medical Mutual Aid Society, which covers such enormous costs, is a blessed organization with God’s power working behind the scenes.

As someone who has received such tremendous help from the Christian Medical Mutual Aid Society, I don’t even know how to express my gratitude. If my wife hadn’t signed us up right away five years ago, we would have been in serious trouble. None of my relatives or fellow church members ever imagined that I would end up needing such major surgery.

I’ve always taken care of my body by avoiding alcohol, tobacco, and coffee, not overeating, and exercising regularly, so I never imagined I’d develop atherosclerosis and end up needing this surgery. According to my doctor, it could be due to genetic factors. Both my grandfather and my father passed away prematurely from strokes.
Health insurance in the United States is as essential as car insurance. As we go about our busy lives here, we never know when or how we might face hardship. I pray that many Christians will join the Christian Medical Mutual Aid Society so that the Scripture, “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ,” may be fulfilled.

Through the Christian Medical Mutual Aid Society, we give thanks, praise, and glory to our Lord, who has bestowed the grace of Jehovah Jireh upon us. We also express our gratitude to the officers of the Christian Medical Mutual Aid Society, who care for others with the love of Jesus, and we pray that God’s grace may abound in their lives.
